Department of Teacher Education and School Research (ILS)is one of three departments in the Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Oslo.

The Department of Teacher Education and School Research (ILS) is Norway’s leading academic department in the areas of subject didactics, educational leadership and school-based research and development. The Department is Norway’s largest teacher education institution at university level.

The Department has around 500 students in the Teacher Education Programme (PPU) – both full- and part-time, around 100 master’s degree students in subject didactics and around 200 master’s degree students in educational leadership.

The Department has around 90 academic and 40 administrative staff.

Associate professor of Mentoring in Education

A permanent full-time position as Associate Professor (SKO 1011) in the field of Mentoring in Education is vacant at the Department of Teacher Education and School Research (ILS).Teacher education institutions are intended to prepare student teachers for a professional life as a teacher, but are also intended to foster teachers’ professional growth. Mentoring promotes this ambition. Supervision of student teachers and mentoring of newly qualified teachers are fields of study at the Department of Teacher Education and School Research.

The position is linked to the teacher education programmes at ILS (full-time and part-time undergraduate teacher education programme (PPU), the graduate teacher education programme (LeP), and Teach First Norway) and the mentor education programme. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the department’s research through participation in either the research group Teacher Professionalism and Educational Change; Practices, Purposes, Policies (TEPEC), or the research group Curriculum Studies, Leadership and Educational Governance (CLEG). Contribution to the efforts of ProTed, Centre of Excellence in Teacher Education is expected as well.

Job description:

  • Promote the development of Mentoring in Education through research, publication of academic work nationally and internationally, and participation in national and international networks
  • Participate in planning, teaching and supervision in teacher education programmes, in mentor education, and in in-service training
  • Contribute to the efforts of ProTed, the Centre of Excellence in Teacher Education
  • Contribute to research dissemination targeted at both professional actors and the general public
  • Administrative tasks

Qualifications

  • The applicant must be able to document research competence linked to Mentoring in Education. The minimum competence requirement for the position of associate professor is a PhD in areas relevant for the field of Mentoring in Education
  • Scientific papers and relevant expertise in the field of Mentoring in Education
  • Experience from the Norwegian or Scandinavian education sector (schools grade 8-13, and/or teacher training for grade 8-13)
  • Basic teaching competence
  • Documented knowledge of and familiarity with the Norwegian or the Scandinavian educational systems
  • Advanced spoken and written proficiency in Norwegian (alternatively Swedish or Danish) and English
  • Personal suitability and motivation


In the ranking of competent applicant, the whole range of qualifications will be considered, including the applicant’s ability to communicate and personal suitability. Adequate research in the field of Mentoring in Education is an important criterion in the ranking of qualified applicants.

Emphasis will also be placed on the applicant’s experience and ability to attract research funding from external sources.

Applicants who on appointment cannot provide documentary evidence of basic teaching competence must acquire such competence in the course of a period of two years. Applicants who are not competent in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish must acquire such competence within two years subsequent to their appointment.
